Go back to February. The first US strike on Iranian positions sent Bitcoin from $89,000 to $79,000 in four hours.
Go back to May. Trump posted nuclear strike AI imagery and Bitcoin dropped $6,000 in minutes.
Go back to June. Iran shot down a US Apache helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz. Bitcoin fell to $60,744 within 15 minutes of Trump’s Truth Social post.
On Satturday the US military struck Iran. Bitcoin barely moved.
That is not a blip. It is the market telling you something has changed.
What Changed
Every previous Iran escalation hit Bitcoin for the same reason. Geopolitical fear raises the probability of oil supply disruption. Oil disruption raises inflation expectations. Higher inflation keeps the Fed from cutting. A Fed that cannot cut is bad for risk assets. Bitcoin is a risk asset. Sell.
That chain of logic ran cleanly from February through June. Every headline, every strike, every torpedo attack on a tanker translated into a Bitcoin sell-off within hours.
The chain is broken now. Here is why.
The Treasury buyback announcement on August 19 changed the structural backdrop. When the government signals it will intervene in the bond market to suppress long-end yields regardless of inflation, the inflation-to-Fed-to-Bitcoin transmission mechanism weakens. The market is no longer pricing “Iran escalation means higher inflation means Fed stays hawkish means Bitcoin falls.” It is pricing “Iran escalation means higher oil means Treasury intervenes to keep yields from seizing up means Bitcoin holds.”
The playbook changed. The market updated. The analysts running the February logic have not.
The Short Position Flush Is the Other Half
In August, $4.3 billion in bearish crypto positions were liquidated. The traders who were short Bitcoin expecting Iran escalation to drive it to $55,000 got wiped out at $62,000 in June and again during the August squeeze. They are not short anymore. They cannot sell what they do not have.
Every previous Iran escalation hit a market full of holders who had not been shaken out yet. February hit holders who bought above $100,000. May hit holders from the $82,000 to $90,000 range. June hit whatever was left.
Today’s escalation hits a market where the weak hands sold at $62,000 to $67,000 and the buyers who replaced them paid lower prices with lower cost basis and higher conviction. The marginal seller from February does not exist in September.
What $77,600 Actually Means
Bitcoin at $77,600 after a US military strike on Iran is not a sign that the market does not care about the war. It is a sign that the market already priced the war at $62,000.
The June low was the Iran risk premium being extracted in real time. The head and shoulders breakdown we called at $72,000 targeted $62,800 exactly. The pattern played out. The war premium got priced. The recovery from $62,800 to $78,000 is the market removing that premium as the situation stabilized.
Today’s strike did not add new information. It confirmed a war that the market has been trading since February. Confirmation of a known risk does not move markets the way a new risk does. The February strike was new. Today’s strike is the fourteenth escalation in a seven-month war. The market has a model for this now.
The One Risk That Could Break This
The scenario that breaks today’s resilience is a Strait of Hormuz closure. Not a strike. Not a torpedo. An actual full closure of the strait to commercial traffic.
Iran has been operating a toll system on the Strait since May. Ships have been paying up to $2 million per crossing. That system continues operating. As long as oil moves, even at a premium, the inflation shock stays contained to the level already priced in.
A full closure is different. 20% of global oil trade stops moving. Oil goes to $130 or higher immediately. CPI rips. The Treasury buyback mechanism cannot absorb an oil shock of that magnitude. The Fed-to-Bitcoin transmission chain reasserts itself and $77,600 does not hold.
That has not happened. Today’s strikes did not close the strait. Until it does, Bitcoin’s new relationship with Iran escalation is the one you saw today.
The market learned something between February and September. The price of learning it was $62,800.
